The books in this series are written primarily for two types of clientele: those engaged in educational planning and administration, in developing as well as developed countries; and those, such as senior government officials and policymakers, seeking a more general understanding of educational planning and how it relates to national development. They are intended to be of use either for private study or in formal training programmes. One of the few summaries available on the broad literature devoted to social inequalities at school. It examines both the scale and various aspects of these inequalities. It also discusses their origin both within families and in the daily functioning of schools and the classroom with reference to sociological research. Finally, it describes educational policies for reducing inequalities in school careers ranging from classroom-based measures to policies with an impact on the structural parameters of the system.
